Visitor Info

Situated on a wide and naturally sheltered walkway below Victoria Parade and above the bay, the market has plenty of space for a safe, outdoor shopping experience in a truly picturesque location.

There are three pay and display car parks in close proximity to this market at Chandos Square, Crofts Place and Vere Road. Broadstairs train station is also less than half a mile from the market.

From its early Roman settlement the modern town of Broadstairs developed and grew from a fishing community centred around a local shrine (Shrine of Our Lady) in the 11th century when the area was then called Bradstow(e), meaning “broad place”. It continued to expand with the popularity of steam boats into a tourist desitnation – despite it not being served directly by rail until 1863 when the station was built as part of an extension from Margate to Ramsgate Harbour by the Kent Coast Railway.

The towns’ Viking Bay has a distinctive set of steps and rising from the sands to The Parade. To the east of the bay is Bleak House. The house  was built in 1801 on the site of the North Cliff Battery which was used as a coastal station for observing maritime activity. Charles Dickens leased the Fort  House (1840s-1852) and it was subsequently renamed Bleak House, because its owner thought that it had been used by Dickens in his tale of the same name. Although this has never been confirmed the site (recently operating as a guest house) had a smuggling museum and ‘Dickens’ Study’. It is now under private owndership.
