Visitor Info

The name of the town is from the Old English Tenetwaradenn, meaning a denn  (swine-pasture) for men of Thanet. St Mildred’s Church dates from teh 12th century and  records of dwellings in Tenterden can be found in dating back to the 14th century where a wool industry existed. The Romney Marsh was mostly under water then and nearby Small Hythe was a busy port. Local Wealden wood was used to build ships.

Nearer present day – its railway station opened in 1903 and ran until 1954, partly reopening in 1974 as the Kent and East Sussex Railway running from Tenterden Town Station to Bodiam station, near Bodiam Castle.  Tenterden itself offers a wealth of independent shops, so come to the market and stay for the day to enjoy the gems within one of Kent’s most picturesque towns.
